On friendship lost

When I was desperately looking for answers about a year ago, I googled some terms on blogger.com like "working mom" and "postpartum depression" and "new mom help" just to find anything that made sense. I didn't have ANY local friends with babies, and felt incredibly alone. I didn't really know how to reach out to old friends and the things that were on my mind, like survivng the day, didn't seem that interesting to long-distance friends.
I struggled through the days at work, and one of the things I did to pass time while working on pesticide communications (I wish I was making that up) was to read blogs like the one written by a woman in Toronto. I was immediately drawn to the title of her blog, "Her Bad Mother" because it conveyed what I was feeling as a formerly type-a achiever, perfectionist, now humbled, inadequate, new and stumbling mother.
Over the months that followed, HBM, and other sites like hers, made me feel less alone.
Now again, HBM writes something that I can instantly relate to...the evolution and loss of a friendship after having a baby.
I don't know for sure if I've lost the friend I have in mind; unlike HBM, I never got a kiss-off. There was no official e-mail or end communication. We still exchange voice-mails occasionally, as if we intend to catch up soon. But the last time we really talked was in January of this year, during my job search and her job relocation. I know we're both busy; that's true enough. I still feel some guilt for not attending her wedding, but I don't know how I could have. It was only five weeks after my delivery, it would have been impossible to bring the newborn to a blazing sunlight beach destination wedding, and there were no provisions to pump, let alone travel with a pack-in-play - I would have been the only one with children there...I could go on. Obviously the guilt is still there. At the time, she says she understood, but I would have been hurt had it been me.  I guess I'll never know, because in the interim year - her first year of marriage and my first year of motherhood - we've continued to drift. The first year of motherhood is hard, and I didn't reach out much. Didn't feel like talking on the phone much until about six months in. I tell myself that maybe she'll undestand when she's a mother. But that day might never come, because she doesn't know if she can have kids. I don't know where we go from here.

Mini-update

Garcon is looking and acting more boyish, thanks to his new haircut and his continued improved mobility. He is getting more and more confident in his walking and the tumbles are fewer. We are spending a lot of time outside and one of his favorite toys is his little mower. It makes a clicking sound when you walk, and it's just the right height for him to push/pull. Last weekend, Daddy rolled the mower out of the garage, and Garcon grabbed his mower and followed right after, with a purpose in his walk. It was very cute.

He's also verbalizing a lot, much more just in the last 10 days or so. Many words/sounds, though the most recognizable ones are "dog," "mama," "dada," and "that." Usually he'll point at something and say a word, emphatically. That! He's also begun to sing in the car.

The cicadas are almost gone, thankfully, so it will be more pleasant to be outside soon. The decibel level in the backyard was almost too much to have a phone conversation. And it drowned out the sound of police sirens, from a distance

Catching up

Great to hear from you! How is everything going? Sorry for the delay in getting back...I am full of good intentions and just need to find time to do the things that are important! I know you understand what I mean...ah, the lives of mothers are busy. :)

Things are good here...I started a new job in March (same industry - marketing, new company) and love it. Great workplace, nice people, interesting clients. I'm also closer to home, which is nice. It was really important to simplify my life so that I could spend more time.

My little guy is getting so big...I'm sure you're seeing the same with yours. Hard to believe they were little tiny things once. People are already asking whether the second one is coming soon. I used to just laugh and say let me get thorugh the first year. Ooops - now I need a new line! :)

Would love to hear how things are going for you. Are you still working at the museum? And most importantly, how's your clan?

Take care -

P.S. Send pictures! Here's my little guy with my parents' puppy, Molly.

Read-a-lotta-blogs...

But write-a-lot? Not so much.

I'm a consistent reader of blogs, but much less of a writer lately. You see, I've discovered and become addicted to Google Reader, which allows me to harness RSS, subscribe to my favorite blogs and read all of them at once. I can see which have been updated easily and which haven't...it's really quite a beautiful system.

But in all this reading, I'm not writing very much. Partly, I've been tied up with the new job. Yet I don't want to miss capturing the dialogue of life, either. So I'm newly committed to getting back on track.

Check back and see if I've kept to the commitment...

What to Wear

Hi C -

I've been thinking of you this week, and how I should definitely call you one of these evenings. (thanks for your return call over the Memorial Day weekend)

And then this morning happened. I spent nearly 30 precious minutes trying to figure out what to wear, dammit...what to wear that looks stylish without trying, and what definitely doesn't look MOMISH. I've been feeling a little too Momish lately and I don't like that style much. About 15 minutes in, I realized I still needed to call you, and that you would totally understand this dilemma based on your blog a few days ago. Meanwhile, Nicholas is starting to peep and I haven't blow-dried yet...erg.

I came across a blog describing this issue - and as I read it, I thought you might like the entire Work-it Mom site.

What else is new?
